A River & Sound Review
at the Orcas Center
Saturday, May 31 at 7:00 pm

Started in February 2006 by Puyallup teacher and writer Jay Bates, A River & Sound Review is a one-of-a-kind, live literary arts entertainment program that features the work of writers and musicians from the Puget Sound region.  Also designed for audience interaction via its two "literary game shows," Name That Book and Head to Head Shakespeare Trivia Challenge, A River & Sound Review succeeds in its efforts to make the literary arts not only accessible to the public, but also tremendously fun.  Each show is different, with varying features like the East Meets East Meets West Women's Book Club or the gripping saga of As the Publishing World Turns.

The May performance features Orcas Island's own Olga Symphony known for their eclectic mix of musical styles and instruments.  The consummate performers play everything from the cello to the fiddle to the acoustic saw (they claim the electric saw requires too much gear).  Equally as entertaining as their music are their costumes and off-the-cuff humor.  Their easy rapport extends from stage to audience as audience members begin to feel like old friends.

Master poet Marvin Bell will read from his latest book Mars Being Red, as well as favorites from his other 18 powerful and moving books of poetry.  Bell was the judge of the Artsmith Poetry Contest, and will read alongside the contest winners: Derek Mong from Massachusetts, Timothy Kelly from Washington State, and Annie Lightheart from Oregon.
